Fire at vacant Easton building

EASTON, Pa. -

Firefighters worked into the early hours Tuesday morning battling a fire at a vacant building in Easton.

The fire broke out around 11 p.m. Monday at Rockwood Pigments, 1525 Wood Ave. in Building #39 on the property.

Deputy Fire Chief John Price said the building houses older machinery which has not been used in decades.

No one was in the building at the time of the fire and no injuries were reported.

Firefighters got the blaze under control before 1 a.m. Tuesday.

The fire remains under investigation but Price said it is not considered suspicious.

Price said the entire plant underwent asbestos abatement in the late 1980s or early 1990s.

He said some paint and siding materials at the plant may contain non-airborne asbestos, but those areas were primarily on another building.

Price said although the fire would not likely have released any asbestos, the staff at Rockwood were performing tests to see if any was released.

Easton Fire Department was assisted by the Wilson Borough Fire Department.

Officials say the fire did not affect any businesses in the area. There's no word on how the fire started.
