Four new officers were introduced to the Allentown police force on Wednesday.

Mayor Ed Pawlowski administered the oath of office to Ismael Segarra of Easton, John Perez of Tobyhanna, Anthony Bowland of Bath and Victor Diaz-Gonzalez of Allentown.

“Pay strict attention to your instructors,” advised Pawlowski.  “Police work is a very rewarding profession, but it is also dangerous.  Police officers are called to scenes that most other people want to avoid.  I admire all of you for your bravery and your courage.  The people of this city, our business workers and owners and all our visitors appreciate your efforts every single day,” the mayor added.

The addition of the four brings the total number of police officers in Allentown to 200.

Retirements in recent years had reduced the force to 164.

The city plans to add 16 additional officers over the next few months, thanks to two federal grants.

Segarra served in the U.S. Marine Corps for four years and is currently in the Marine Corps Reserves.  He is pursuing a BA in Criminal Justice.

Perez has a BA in Sociology and Criminal Justice from East Stroudsburg University.

Bowland has a BA from the University of North Texas.

Diaz-Gonzalez holds an Associates Degree in Computer Technology from Lincoln Tech.

“We are confident that our increased manpower will make a positive impact on increasing public safety across the city,” said Allentown Police Chief Roger MacLean.  “I appreciate the commitment and dedication exhibited daily by my officers and supervisors.  I want to welcome these new officers on-board.”
