"It's just something I'll never be able to erase from my mind."
It's a day Karen Hamm re-lives often, and just talking about it makes her tear up. Back on October 16th, she was at the store near her home on St. John Street in Allentown, when her 3-year-old granddaughter Annabelle Ruth ran across the street and was hit by a car.
"I remember her yelling for Grammy, and I remember yelling stop," Karen explained. "It all just happened so very, very fast."
The little girl was thrown 75-feet, and the woman behind the wheel just kept driving. Annabelle was fighting for her life. She was flown to the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia with a head injury and broken bones.
It's unclear what the long-term effects of the injuries could be, but what the family does know is Annabelle has a long road to recovery ahead of her.
"It's really about people helping people," added Annabelle's great aunt, Lori Hamm.
She says as soon as the tragedy happened she knew she had to help.
"When the accident happened, immediately my husband and I put plans into works to have a benefit because we knew there would be medical expenses."
Right now two fundraisers are planned. A benefit breakfast is set for January 19th at the Schnecksville Fire Company. The all-you-can-eat meal costs just $7.50 per person. Benefit bingo is planned for March 15th at the Jordan Lutheran Church Family Center. That fundraiser is $20 for 20 games. Between the pair, Lori aims to raise about $4,000, but every little bit helps.
"We're hoping that they will be able to take care of some of the bills," Lori shared.
Medical bills that piled up over the nearly 10-weeks little Annabelle recovered in the hospital. Just this week she finally got to go home.
"She is my Christmas miracle, and it just wouldn't have been the same if she wouldn't have been here," said Karen holding back tears. "This family has definitely got a Christmas miracle this year."
Allentown Police say 25-year-old April Frame was the one behind the wheel in the hit and run accident. Investigators tell us the Salisbury Township woman was driving without a license. Her next court date is January 2nd.
