Head-on crash kills one, hurts others

NORTH WHITEHALL TWP., Pa. -

One person is dead and others have been flown to the hospital after two cars collided head-on, and one burst into flames, police said.

Crews were working to rescue the drivers of two vehicles on Route 145 near the Treichlers Bridge in North Whitehall Township, Lehigh County, Monday night.

The accident happened around 10 p.m.

The driver of one car, a 41-year-old man from Danielsville, crossed the center line of Route 145, and crashed into a woman driving in the opposite direction, state police said.

James Shiner was pronounced dead at the scene, officials said. 

The woman, a 24-year-old from Jim Thorpe, was flown to an area hospital, along with the passengers in her car.

The extent of their injuries wasn't known.
