The suspect in a hit-and-run accident is facing a slew of charges, including drug possession, after fleeing police, officials said.
Charles L. Mest crashed his car into the back of an SUV at Stefko Boulevard and Daly Avenue, at the south end of the Minsi Trail Bridge, in Bethlehem at about 11:30 p.m. Tuesday, officials said.
Mest, 48, then went through a red light at Daly Avenue and Sands Boulevard after illegally passing other cars on the shoulder of the road, officials said.
When police tried to stop Mest, he fled throughout the South Side on Hayes and Mechanic streets and stopped after crashing into a curb on Hobart Street, officials said.
Mest was caught after trying to flee on foot, and police found what turned out to be a quantity of methamphetamine in his car, officials said.
Mest, of 713 Martin St., Bangor, Northampton Co., was arraigned early Wednesday morning on several charges, including leaving the scene of an accident, reckless driving, driving with a suspended license, DUI and drug possession, officials said.
He was committed to Northampton County Prison on $25,000 bail, according to court documents.
A preliminary hearing is set for 9 a.m. Aug. 9.
