Joseph Cook claims he stole sister's car to impress girl, police say
A man is in trouble with the law after stealing his sister's car to impress a girl and then forgetting where he parked it, officials said.
Joseph H. Cook drove off in a 2003 silver Volkswagen Passat belonging to his sister, Elaina Brice, after she threw him out of their home at 107 1/2 West Main St., Pen Argyl, Northampton Co., at 9:30 p.m. Saturday because he was drunk and belligerent, officials said.
Brice realized her car was missing when Cook returned home two hours later, knocking on the door and trying to get in through a front window, officials said, adding that Brice called police when Cook couldn't tell her where the car was.
Cook told police that he took the car to impress a girl, but because he was drunk, he could not remember where he parked it, only that it was "somewhere in Pen Argyl" and not damaged, officials said.
Cook, 22, was arraigned early Sunday morning on charges of theft, receiving stolen property, unauthorized use of a motor vehicle and driving with a suspended license and committed to the Northampton County Prison on $15,000 bail, according to court documents.
A preliminary hearing is set for 9 a.m. March 27.
