SALISBURY TWP., Pa. -

The Lehigh Valley Health Network is celebrating a woman who now has a new lease on life.

Mary Longo, 90, of Hazleton, underwent "trans-catheter aortic valve replacement."

LVHN said Longo is its 100th patient to receive a new heart valve using that procedure.

LVHN's chief of cardiology said the TAVR procedure gives hope to patients who are too high-risk for open-heart surgery.

Longo said the experience was much better than what she expected.

"It has been a very easy procedure from the patient's point of view, and I will say I am grateful to the whole team," Longo said.

Longo is a retired math professor. Her daughter said she knew her mom was going to be okay when she recited the quadratic formula -- ax2 + bx + c -- after surgery.
