Skiiers getting a lot of time on the slopes this winter

LONGSWAMP TWP., Pa. - The brutal cold has gripped Berks County, but ski resorts don't seem to mind.

Business has been booming, and officials are hoping to recover a multimillion dollar loss from the past two seasons.

Berks County dodged old man winter's latest attack on Monday, but plenty of snow was still on the slopes at Bear Creek in Longswamp Township.

The ski resort is having a banner year, and trying to recoup more than $3.5 million it lost after back-to-back mild winters.

"This season is a lot better, skier visits are up and people see snow in their yards and they want to come out," said Ryan Werst, marketing assistant at Bear Creek.

There was a lot of grass visible on the mountain the past two years, but this winter it's been pretty much white as far as the eye can see. Thanks to mother nature and back-to-back storms, Bear Creek has not had to make as much snow this year.

"We reached capacity once already this year and we haven't seen that in 2 to 3 years now," said Werst.

The conditions have been ideal, but even some skiers said they wouldn't mind hanging up their gear, at least for the season.

"We live in Long Island, NY and we got hit hard. It's the shoveling I don't like," said Julie Steele, who is looking forward to Spring.

"It's not good trying to go out and play with your friends, other than playing in snow," said Richard Davison, who enjoys winter but is ready for warmer weather.

Nothing is official, but Bear Creek said this year's numbers look good and they're hoping to ride this winter out through the end of March.
