The Allentown School Board voted unanimously to deny an application by the Allentown Engineering Academy Charter School during Thursday night’s meeting. Board member Joanne Jackson was absent.
The board acted on the recommendation by Superintendent C. Russell Mayo to deny the request. Mayo explained during the meeting that the application suffered three major shortcomings, including failure to provide a viable budget to carry out the proposal, lack of a comprehensive curriculum plan and lack of Allentown support.
“This applicant received just five letters of support,” Mayo noted.
Unfortunately the applications just doesn’t meet the requirements,” said Board Member Julie Ambrose.
“None of us relish in sitting in judgment of these charter school proposals,” added Board Member Scott Armstrong.
In other business Thursday night, the board voted 7-1 to support Governor Corbett’s proposal to privatize the state liquor store system on the premise that the district would have the potential to receive financial assistance as part of the sale. Board Member Andrew Weiss dissented.
In addition the board approved rental agreements with Lehigh University for the use of Stabler Arena to house 2013 commencement ceremonies. Dieruff will hold their graduation at 7 p.m. on June 14th and the next night it will be Allen’s turn at 7:30 p.m.
