Anthony Guy Devicaris arrested in theft of sewer grates in Bethlehem
Some 60 grates stolen from streets, sidewalks this month, police say
A 25-year-old Allentown man has been arrested in the theft of dozens of metal storm sewer grates in Bethlehem.
Anthony Guy Devicaris of 292 Water Lilly Court, was apprehended Thursday on charges he stole the grates to sell them for scrap.
His arrest and the recovery of several stolen grates, police said, were the result of cooperation from Blinderman and Sons Scrap Yard in Hellertown, Northampton Co.
Approximately 60 grates have been stolen since the beginning of November, leaving open holes in sidewalks and streets and creating a serious safety hazard for pedestrians and vehicles, said police, who added that each grate is valued at $250.
The thefts cost city taxpayers approximately $15,000, but that estimated figure is expected to rise when the city adds in labor costs for covering the open holes and replacing the stolen grates, police said.
Devicaris was charged with one count each of theft and receiving stolen property and 60 counts of recklessly endangering another person. He was committed to the Northampton County Prison on $35,000 bail.
An additional arrest is pending, police said.
