Anthony Peebles, alleged thief, taken into custody by Easton officer en route to crime scene
A man accused of snatching a $20 bill from a woman's hand was taken into custody by a police officer who was headed to the crime scene.
Anthony N. Peebles was spotted walking in the 600 block of Northampton Street in Easton at about 1:45 p.m. Wednesday by Ofc. Russell Demko, who was in a patrol car at 7th and Northampton streets, officials said.
Minutes before, Demko had been given the description of a man wearing blue jeans who ran away after grabbing a $20 from Rochelle Kreider's hand as she was walking in the unit block of South 5th Street, officials said.
Demko detained a sweating and out-of-breath Peebles, until Kreider came and identified him as the man who took her money, officials said, adding that a $20 bill was found in the right front pocket of Peebles' jeans.
Peebles, 20, of 41 North 8th St., Easton, was arraigned on robbery and theft charges and committed to the Northampton County Prison on $10,000 bail, according to court documents.
A preliminary hearing is set for 1 p.m. Nov. 2.
