Allentown police have arrested a person they believe is responsible for a homicide early Sunday morning in the city.
Investigators have identified the victim as 29-year-old Andy Hernandez Rojas of Allentown. They don't believe his death was random.
Late Sunday afternoon, police announced the arrest of Pedro Alicea-Perez, 35, of Allentown, in connection to the shooting.
Police said Alicea-Perez is charged with criminal homicide, receiving stolen property, and unlawful possession of a firearm.
Yellow chalk marks the spot where the crime took place just before 3 a.m. Sunday on North Morris Street.
"It was really loud," neighbor Maria Reyes said. She said that noise woke her up.
It's still unclear what led up to the shooting, but Reyes saw everything that happened afterwards.
"I saw everyone running with the boy, carrying him, and then they threw him on the floor," she said.
Allentown Police said friends of Hernandez Rojas drove him to Sacred Heart Hospital. Minutes later investigators were on scene.
"He was then transported via ambulance to Lehigh Valley Hospital where he eventually succumbed to his injuries at 4:01 a.m.," explained Assistant Allentown Police Chief Joe Hanna.
Detectives are working on numerous leads. Investigators don't think Hernandez Rojas lived where the shooting happened.
"We believe we know why he was there," said Assistant Chief Hanna. "It's not something that we're going to disclose at this point in the investigation."
He goes on to say Hernandez Rojas may have been targeted.
"We're looking at the possibility of this being victim specific."
The crime has neighbors on edge. They tell 69 News the neighborhood is normally quiet.
"It surprised me that that happened, at least over here," said Randy Vazquez. "We know that Allentown is getting violent but in this area we never hear things that like."
"We're certainly very hopeful that this case will be solved in a timely manner and that we'll bring the perpetrator or perpetrators to justice," said Assistant Chief Hanna.
An autopsy is planned for Monday.
