Autopsy today for woman found burned beyond recognition in Salisbury
A gruesome scene awaited investigators Thursday morning in Lehigh County. A woman was found dead and burned beyond recognition on the side of a road in Salisbury Township. Now authorities are trying to learn more about the victim and what happened to her.
Folks living on Chestnut Hill Road were shocked to learn why their street was lined with police.
"My sister called and said that there was a body up around the corner here," explained Tim Bollinger.
"This is definitely out of the ordinary for us," added Elisse Cassick.
The Lehigh County Coroner says Thursday morning a call came in for a body on fire. When officers got on scene they discovered a woman's body burned on the side of Chestnut Hill Road, that's near the Unami Fish and Game Club.
"Her body was burned beyond recognition," explained Lehigh County Coroner Scott Grim.
He says the victim is between 20 and 40 years old, and is either white or a light skinned Hispanic woman. Officials are calling it a suspicious death. For hours Thursday the coroner's office, Salisbury Township police and state police poured over the scene. They left around 3PM and our cameras got a little closer. Just off the road we found burned trees and a blackened guardrail.
"It's unsettling," said Cassick. "I'll be happier when I at least know what happened."
"You just don't want to see the coroner in your neighborhood," explained Bollinger. "They do an important job, I just don't want to see it happen here."
An autopsy is scheduled for Friday morning to figure out the cause of death.
Because of how badly the body was burned the coroner is still working to ID the woman.
