The Bethlehem Area School District has been discussing the approval of renewing the LERTA Tax Abatement Program with the City of Bethlehem. After being tabled at the School Board’s last meeting, the Board approved renewing this agreement at their meeting on Monday night.

This program is in regards to a portion of the former Bethlehem Steel land near the interchange of Route 412. The expiration date of this agreement is at the end of this year. The City of Bethlehem has already renewed their part of the agreement.

After thorough discussion between representatives from Bethlehem’s Economic Development staff and the School Board at two Board Finance Committee meetings and one regular School Board meeting, a recommendation was made to approve the renewing of the agreement.

The LERTA Tax Abatement Program passed with a 7-1 vote, with Board Vice President Michele T. Cann voting against. The Bethlehem Area School Board will be participating in this renewed agreement with the taxing bodies of the City of Bethlehem and Northampton County. The term of this agreement extends from January 1, 2013 through December 31, 2017.
