BETHLEHEM, Pa. -

A man was arrested after hitting his girlfriend who was trying to stop him from spanking their young daughter for crying, officials said.

Joshua M. Bauder, 34, struck Lauren Worozilchak and their 2-year-old at about 6:50 p.m. Saturday in their home at 15 West Spruce St., Bethlehem, officials said.

Worozilchak said Bauder started spanking their daughter "excessively and with full force" because she was crying, officials said.

When Worozilchak tried to stop the spanking, Bauder grabbed her by the neck and threw her to the ground, causing her to black out, officials said.

Bauder told police he spanked his daughter because she was screaming, and that he threw Worozilchak to the ground because she grabbed him from behind and scratched him, officials said.

Bauder was arraigned on assault and harassment charges and committed to Northampton County Prison on $15,000 bail, according to court documents.

A preliminary hearing is set for 9 a.m. Oct. 23.
