ALLENTOWN, Pa. -

The coroner is examining the circumstances surrounding the death of an inmate who was found unresponsive in his cell on New Year's Day.

Andrew Czonstka was found slumped down behind the bunk beds in his cell inside the Lehigh Co. Prison in Allentown around 4:50 p.m., said prison officials, who added that he had one end of a sheet tied around his neck and the other end tied to the upper bunk.

Prison staff performed CPR on Czonstka until emergency medical personnel arrived.

Czonstka, 25, whose last address was on Creek Rd. in Slatington, Lehigh Co., was taken to Sacred Heart Hospital, and then to Lehigh Valley Hospital, where he died Monday.

Police said Czonstka tried to steal a flat screen television and a bag of underwear from the Target store in South Whitehall Twp.

Czonstka fought with store security officers and an off-duty Allentown police officer before being taken into custody, police said.

Czonstka was arrested Friday night on charges of retail theft and disorderly conduct. He was also arrested for violating the terms of his parole supervision from previous convictions.

He was taken to the Lehigh County Prison at 1 a.m. Saturday.

Officials said the charges were dropped after Czonstka died.

An autopsy is scheduled for Wednesday.
