MACUNGIE, Pa. -

It's the mayor vs. the police chief. Now the Attorney General has been called in.

Lehigh County District Attorney James B. Martin has asked the Pennsylvania Attorney General's office to handle a request by Macungie's mayor for an investigation in the borough.

Macungie Mayor Rick Hoffman wants an investigation into the hiring of the borough's police chief Edward Harry Jr. Hoffman says the chief was hired in violation of borough code.

Since Martin oversaw a previous ruling in the dispute, he excused himself from further involvement.

Hoffman had sued to gain access to police department schedules, records and other information. Martin intervened and argued the mayor should not have access to sensitive investigative records.

However, a Lehigh County judge ruled that the mayor is the top law enforcement officer of the borough and is entitled to access records.
