ALLENTOWN, Pa. -

The flag of the Dominican Republic flew proudly over Allentown.

Lehigh Valley residents of Dominican descent gathered at City Hall Plaza Wednesday afternoon to celebrate the country's Independence Day.

The republic declared its independence from Haiti 169 years ago Wednesday, in 1844.

Mayor Ed Pawlowski and City Council President Julio Guridy were on hand for the celebration.
