BETHLEHEM, Pa. -

A woman angry over the alleged theft of her daughter's coats was arrested after hitting an 11-year-old girl she had accused with a metal coat hanger, officials said.

Donna E. Hicks hit the girl in her apartment at 614Atlantic St., Bethlehem, at about 3:10 p.m. Thursday in front of two witnesses -- her neighbor, Kelly Grim, and a 12-year-old girl -- officials said.

Grim and the two young girls had just arrived home when they were confronted by Hicks, who started yelling at them, calling them derogatory names and accusing them of taking her daughter's coats, officials said.

Hicks grabbed the 11-year-old by the head and struck her with a metal coat hanger, giving the girl a bump on her head the size of a quarter and a three-quarter-inch red mark on her right cheek, officials said.

Hicks, 55, was arraigned on assault and harassment charges and released on $2,500 unsecured bail, according to court documents.

A preliminary hearing is set for 9 a.m. Jan. 7.
