Easton Area School District proposes more than 2% tax increase
The Easton Area School District Finance Committee unveiled its proposed 2013-2014 budget Monday night, and residents may not be happy to hear it assumes a 2.1 percent tax increase.
Contractual salaries, social security and pension obligations, and medical premiums, totaling nearly $5 million, account for the raise.
With a 2.1 percent tax index, the total budget would be $137.9 million, a 3.4 percent increase from the current budget.
Under the proposed plan, the deficit comes in at $4.2 million. With no increase, the deficit would be significantly higher at $5.6 million.
To exceed the 2.1 percent hike, the board must do so by referendum or exception. The deadline to adopt the final budget is June 30, 2013.
