Edwin Martinez who hung on to rented car faces charges, police say
A man who became too attached to a car he rented for a month is cooling his heels in jail, officials said.
Edwin Martinez refused to return the 2012 gold Chevy Cruz he rented from the Hertz franchise at 45 West Broad St., Bethlehem, when it was due on Dec. 27, 2012, officials said.
Hertz sent a letter to Martinez on Jan. 3 demanding that he return the car, and on Jan. 14 Martinez told a Hertz employee that he would have the car back that evening, but he never did, officials said.
Hertz reported the car stolen on Feb. 19, officials added.
Martinez, 49, of 1218 Howard St., Bethlehem, was arraigned Saturday on charges of theft of leased property, receiving stolen property and unauthorized use of a motor vehicle and committed to the Northampton County Prison on $25,000 bail, according to court documents.
A preliminary hearing is set for 9 a.m. March 26.
