ALLENTOWN, Pa. -

An Allentown woman who twice beat cancer is hoping her new salon will be a cut above the rest.

Joan DaSilva was first diagnosed with breast cancer about 10 years ago, and she was in remission until last year when the cancer came back aggressively.

But she beat it again, and now she's celebrating the grand opening of her new salon -- Altered Images Hair Studio on North 22nd Street in Allentown.

When her business partner first brought up the idea of opening a salon, DaSilva said she was a bit reluctant, but she eventually changed her mind.

"After being sick and going through what I went through, I thought life's too short, and I think we could be really successful. So I decided to say, 'Okay, I'll open up a shop with you,'" said DaSilva.

DaSilva said her bout with cancer taught her to live her life one day at a time, and that's the advice she wants to pass along to anyone else who's battling the disease.
