Laura H. Stewart tells police she stole $424 from Walmart because of health issues
A Walmart employee who officials said stole money from a cash register twice since August was arrested on the day she returned to work from a leave of absence, officials said.
Laura H. Stewart was taken into custody just after midnight Wednesday for taking $128 on Aug. 25 and $296 on Sept. 13 from a register at the Walmart at 3926 Nazareth Pike, Bethlehem Twp., Northampton Co., officials said.
Stewart was spotted taking the money on both occasions on store surveillance video, said officials, adding that Stewart last worked at the store on Sept. 13.
At police headquarters, Stewart admitted to taking the cash, saying she needed it because of health issues and to cover her medical leave of absence, officials said.
Stewart, 49, of 1430 Linden St., Allentown, was arraigned on theft and receiving stolen property charges and released on $10,000 unsecured bail, according to court documents.
A preliminary hearing is set for 9 a.m. Dec. 10.
