BETHLEHEM, Pa. -

A man who was caught shoplifting several six-packs of energy drinks from a pharmacy ran out of steam before he could make it out of the store with most of the merchandise, officials said.

Christopher J. Franco dropped four of the five six-packs of 5 Hour Energy Drink he had hidden in his jacket when he was stopped at the door of the CVS at 327 Woodlawn Ave., Bethlehem, by the store manager at 9:50 a.m. Thursday, officials said.

The manager told Franco he had to pay for the items, but Franco left and took off in his car, officials said.

A CVS worker took down Franco's license plate number, and when Franco was stopped by police a short time later near Center and East Goepp streets, he admitted to the stealing the six-packs, which are worth a total of $85.95, officials said.

When Franco's criminal history was checked, police discovered he had pleaded guilty twice to retail theft, officials said.

Franco, 31, of 177 Lachenour Ave., Easton, was arraigned on retail charges and committed to the Northampton County Prison on $20,000 bail, according to court documents.

A preliminary hearing is set for 1 p.m. March 18.
