Flights, bus service suspended in many areas
Hurricane Sandy is wreaking havoc on mass transportation on the roads and in the air.
LANTA says it is suspending service for Monday.
LANTA bus routes will not operate and all LANTA van service is cancelled except trips to any dialysis centers that are open and trips already scheduled for major medical purposes.
LANTA will make an announcement by 3 p.m. on Monday regarding service on Tuesday.
BARTA says its regular schedule will remain in effect for now but delays are expected.
Amtrak, SEPTA and New York's Metropolitan Transportation Authority have all suspended service.
Bieber Tourways has suspended all service for Monday to and from NYC, to and from Philadelphia and Harrisburg to Reading.
All office and ticket agencies are also closed Monday.
Trans-Bridge Line have also suspended all service to and from NYC, Newark, JFK Airports, Wall Street, Jersey except for the following:
Special emergency transportation service will be available as outlined below:
----Eastbound, run #133, departing Allentown at 7:15 a.m.
----Westbound, run #92, departing New York City PABT at 10 a.m.
----Eastbound, run #135, departing Allentown at 8:30 a.m.
----Westbound, run #96, departing New York City PABT at 12 p.m.
----Eastbound, run #17, departing Doylestown at 8:45 a.m.
----Westbound, run #6, departing New York City PABT at 1 p.m.
Local transit service between Easton and Phillipsburg provided by Delaware River Coach Lines and New Jersey Transit will be suspended at 3 p.m. Monday.
Travelers at airports may not be going anywhere any time soon. Most flights in and out of LVIA Monday have already been canceled, but the airport says all cancelations are on a case-by-case basis and service has not been completely suspended yet.
Meanwhile, Philadelphia International Airport says all flight operations there have been suspended for Monday.
Major carriers such as American Airlines, United and Delta canceled all flights into and out of three area airports in New York, the nation's busiest airspace.
According to the flight-tracking service FlightAware, nearly 10,000 flights have been canceled for Monday and Tuesday, almost all related to the storm.
The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey have announced plans to close the Holland Tunnel at 2 p.m. Monday. Travelers are urged to find an alternate crossing starting around noon as workers begin the shutdown. The tunnel will remain closed until further notice.
New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo says the Brooklyn-Battery Tunnel will also be closed at 2 p.m. Monday. The Lincoln Tunnel will remain open.
As of 10 a.m. Monday, PennDOT and the Pa. Turnpike Commission will termporarily reduce the speed limit to 45 mph and restrict certain types of vehicles on some southeast Pa. roadways.
PennDOT is urging motorists to avoid unnecessary travel but those who must head out will see speeds reduced to 45 mph on the following highways: (as of 12:30 p.m. Monday):
- Interstate 81 from the New York state to Maryland state border;
- Interstates 78, 83, 84, 380, 176 and 76;
- Interstate 283 and Route 283;
- Interstate 80 east of Interstate 81;
- Pennsylvania Turnpike from New Jersey to Carlisle and the Northeast Extension;
- Route 581; and
- U.S. Routes 15, 30, 22/322 and 33
Earlier Monday, PennDOT reduced the speed on the following highways:
- Interstate 76 in Philadelphia and Montgomery counties;
- Interstate 95 in Philadelphia, Bucks and Delaware counties;
- Interstate 476 in Delaware and Montgomery counties;
- Interstate 676 in Philadelphia;
- Pennsylvania Turnpike in Bucks, Chester and Montgomery counties;
- U.S. Route 1 Extension in Philadelphia;
- U.S. Route 1 in Bucks, Philadelphia, Delaware and Chester counties;
- U.S. Route 30 Bypass in Chester County;
- Route 63 (Woodhaven Expressway) in Philadelphia;
- U.S. Route 202 in Chester County;
- Route 309 in Bucks and Montgomery counties;
- U.S. Route 422 in Montgomery County; and
- Route 611 Bypass in Bucks County.
Also, in conjunction with similar restrictions imposed on the Pennsylvania Turnpike, these types of vehicles will be prohibited from traveling on the speed-restricted roadways:
- Class 9 vehicles (Overweight and over-dimensional trucks);
- Empty straight trucks;
- Large Combination Vehicles (tandem trailers and doubles);
- Tractors hauling empty trailers;
- Trailers pulled by passenger vehicles;
- Motorcycles; and
- Recreational Vehicles, or RVs.
PennDOT and the PTC may expand these restrictions to other parts of the state later Monday.
Although PennDOT recommends not traveling during intense storms, motorists can check road conditions on more than 2,900 miles of state roads by calling 5-1-1 or visiting www.511PA.com.
The Monroe County Transit Authority (MCTA) will suspend service as of 5:30 p.m. Monday. Customers are encouraged to make final MCTA trips as early as possible to ensure safe arrival at their destination.

3:40 PM ORANGE ROUTE departing Mt. Effort / Brodheadsville to Bartonsville / Giant
3:30 PM YELLOW ROUTE departing Stroud Mall to Delaware Water Gap / Marshalls Creek / Bushkill
4:37 PM YELLOW ROUTE departing Bushkill / Marshalls Creek to Stroud Mall
MCTA has cancelled ALL service on Tuesday.
