A former Northampton County Prison inmate is suing the county and a number of officials over an attack that he claims left him with permanent injuries.

Matthew Farrell, of New York, was incarcerated at the prison in April of last year. He said he suffered serious injuries due to misconduct and neglect by the prison's corrections officers.

The suit claims a guard knowingly left Farrell's jail cell open at the same time he left a convicted murderer's cell open. Farrell said he was stabbed multiple times by the other inmate.

Farrell also said the same guard who left the cells open was deeply involved in a contraband smuggling ring.

Northampton County Executive John Stoffa said he can't comment on the pending litigation, but he said he has faith in the prison administrators.
