BETHLEHEM, Pa. -

A mechanic was killed in a construction accident in Bethlehem on Friday, officials said.

A backhoe ran over the man, identified as Edward Haines, around 7 a.m. as he was working on the machine in the 300 block of State Street, said police, who added that Haines, 51, of Walnutport, died before emergency crews arrived.

The backhoe also rolled into a car, but caused only minor damage, police said.

The Northampton County coroner's office is investigating, and police said OSHA is involved as this was an industrial accident.
