UPPER MACUNGIE TWP., Pa. -

A motorist, acting as a good Samaritan, was struck by a vehicle and killed Wednesday night, officials said.

Richard Helms pulled his vehicle off to the shoulder of Interstate 78 West at mile-marker 53.7 in Upper Macungie Twp., Lehigh Co., around 9:44 p.m. and walked onto a travel lane to check on a vehicle that had been disabled from a previous crash, state police said.

An approaching vehicle began to spin out of control and crashed into Helms, police said.

Helms, 60, of Cincinnati, Ohio, died a short time later at a nearby hospital, the coroner said.

I-78 was closed for several hours following the accident. Anyone who may have witnessed the crash is asked to contact state police at Fogelsville at 610-395-1438.
