A Northampton County borough is looking for a new mayor.

Nazareth Mayor Fred Daugherty Jr. told 69 News he submitted his resignation from his post as mayor Monday.

"I've been provided an opportunity where I can leave here and attend to my health issues," Daugherty said. "I had planned on this, and the opportunity has presented itself sooner than I thought it would occur. I'm taking advantage of that opportunity... and moving to Tennessee with my wife."

Daugherty, 56, didn't elaborate on what type of health issues he's facing, saying it was personal.

He said he's also resigned from his job at Brown-Daub Chevrolet's body shop.

"This is very jarring for me," he said, "but sometimes change is a good thing."

Daugherty said he's lived in Nazareth since 1975, and that it's been a journey serving as mayor these last three years.

He said opinions will vary on his performance as mayor, but he's happy to have served and, "I have full confidence that they will move ahead."

His resignation is effective immediately.

Dan Chiavaroli, president of the Nazareth Borough Council, said he's the interim mayor, per borough code, but that he doesn't want the job full time.

"The council and I have worked with Mayor Daugherty very hard over the last 3+ years dealing with the Nazareth Borough Police Department and its difficulties," said Chiavaroli. "The mayor’s resignation now requires us to look in a different direction and we will accept résumés from any registered elector of the borough of Nazareth at the borough office until May 2, 2013."

Council will then consider its options to fill the vacancy, possibly acting at its regular meeting on May 6, Chiavaroli said.
