EAST ALLEN TWP., Pa. -

A man is facing charges after choking his wife in their home while their infant child slept nearby, officials said.

Peter J. Klingman attacked his wife during an argument in the living room of their home in the 5000 block of Monocacy Drive, East Allen Twp., Northampton Co., at about 10:15 p.m. Monday, officials said.

Klingman's wife said the argument began after Klingman returned home from drinking, while she was holding their child in her arms in the living room and Klingman began flicking her nose repeatedly and knocked a baby bottle out of her hand, officials said.

The argument escalated when she returned to the living room after putting their child to bed, officials said.

Klingman grabbed his wife's purse, dumped her personal belongings on the floor and stepped on them, officials said, adding that she responded by spitting on Klingman and hitting him on the right side of his head.

Klingman then grabbed her by the neck with both hands, forced her to the ground and slapped her in the forehead "with force," officials said.

Klingman, 32, was arraigned early Tuesday morning on assault and harassment charges and committed to the Northampton County Prison on $5,000 bail, according to court documents.

A preliminary hearing is set for 10 a.m. Feb. 25.
