Police: Registered sex offender Joseph Gering offered girls money for sex
A 62-year-old registered sex offender is facing charges after offering two young girls cash for sex at a fast-food restaurant, officials said.
Joseph F. Gering offered money to a 16-year-old and a 12-year-old who had got into his Jeep in the parking lot at the McDonald's at 442 Wyandotte St., Bethlehem, at 1 a.m. Sunday, officials said.
Gering said he would buy the girls anything they wanted from the McDonald's menu, and then offered both of them $100 each to "hang out" with him, officials said.
The 16-year-old left the car and went to get help, but the 12-year-old remained behind and was then offered $200 by Gering to go back to his hotel room and have sex, officials said, adding that the girl refused and she, too, left the vehicle.
Gering told police he drank eight beers before going to the McDonald's, officials said, noting that Gering was found to be a lifetime registered sex offender after police checked his criminal history.
Gering, of 105 North 5th St., Emmaus, was arraigned on charges of promoting and encouraging prostitution, unlawful contact with minors, corruption of minors, criminal solicitation and general impairment and committed to the Northampton County Prison on $500,000 bail, according to court documents.
