Regional police dept ready to disband
The Berks-Lehigh Regional Police Department is one step closer to disbanding.
Officials from three of the four municipalities that make up the department voted in favor of disbanding the force at a police commission meeting Monday night.
Maxatawny Township and Topton in Berks County, and Upper Macungie Township in Lehigh County, voted to withdraw.
Officials from Lyons said they're not yet ready to make a decision.
The chairman of the Berks-Lehigh commission said the next step is for attorneys to meet and decide how to move forward.
"We know everyone is concerned as who will cover their citizens and their safety. And we want to be able to provide answers as soon as possible," said Edward Early,
chairman of Berks-Lehigh Regional Police Commission.
The Berks-Lehigh police department was formed in 2001. Officials from Upper
Macungie said the township plans to set up its own police force.
