The Salisbury Township School Board unanimously passed the proposed preliminary budget for the fiscal year of 2013 - 14 during Wednesday night's board meeting with a vote of 6 - 0.
The total budget results in a total expenditure amount of $31,788,041 and sets a real estate tax of 17.08 mills. With the action, the board also authorized the administration to apply for all state referendum exceptions in which the district might qualify.
"The preliminary budget is what we are mandated to have before the end of the month," Mr. Russell R. Giordano, board President, said, adding it's the board's first crack at it and it will see changes in the future. Giordano explained the budget process, explaining that altercations will be worked on until the board meeting in June. "There is still work to be done on this. It doesn't mean this [amount] is what it is going to be."
A final proposed budget will be passed in May, with the final budget approval to be voted on in June. Board member Frank Frankenfield made the motion, seconded by Giordano.
The board also approved the Lehigh Carbon Community College (LCCC) budget in the amount of $6,490.157. The budget for the community college includes operating, debt service and capital expenditures. $232,328 of the budget is funded by Salisbury.
The next regular board meeting will meet 7:30 p.m. March 13 at the Salisbury Township Administration Building, 1140 Salisbury Road, Allentown.
