A stray pit bull was killed by police Monday after it attacked a woman and her small dog, police said.
Police said a woman was attacked, bitten and knocked down by an aggressive dog in her front yard in the 1400 block of Pearl Drive, Salisbury Twp., Lehigh County.
The stray dog was a pit bull that was running at large in the neighborhood. Police said a second pit bull was also running loose but was not acting aggressively.
Animal Control and the Lehigh County Humane Society also responded to help.
While on the scene, officers found out the dog had attacked a 73-year-old man who was walking his dog in the same area.
Both people required medical assistance and police took a small dog to an animal hospital for emergency surgery with broken bones and internal injuries from the attack.
During the investigation, the dog returned and started to aggressively approach two officers, who killed the stray on the scene.
Police identified the dog's owner. Police said charges are pending.
The incident is still being investigated.
