Memorial Day is right around the corner and Senator Pat Toomey is saluting the military.

Toomey participated in a military appreciation ceremony Monday at the Pennsylvania National Guard Armory in Allentown.

Local World War II veterans Bertram Winzer and Nate Kline were among those being honored.

Toomey says it's important to honor our heroes from the past and the present.

"We have men and women who are doing this for us today on battlefields in Afghanistan, those who have recently returned from Iraq so this. you know, freedom isn't free and it never lasts if it's not defended," said Toomey.

Toomey is also co-sponsoring legislation to award the Congressional Gold Medal to Winzer and the rest of the Devil's Brigade.

It was one of America's first special forces units.
