Virgil G. Watts tries to cash fraudulent payroll check, police say
A man is facing charges for trying to cash a fraudulent payroll check six months ago, officials said.
Virgil G. Watts gave a bad check for $436.12 from the Ramada Allentown/Whitehall, 1500 MacArthur Road, to a teller at United Check Cashing, 1614 Stefko Boulevard, Bethlehem, at about 2:50 p.m. on Aug. 14, 2012, officials said.
Watts told the teller he worked at the Ramada, but when police contacted Ramada owner Anil Panwala, he said Watts had never worked at the hotel and the check did not come from his business, officials said.
Watts, 26, of 531 West Greenleaf St., Allentown, was arraigned Tuesday night on charges of forgery, theft by deception and trying to pass a bad check and committed to the Northampton County Prison on $1,000 bail, according to court documents.
A preliminary hearing is set for 9:30 a.m. March 7.
