An accident forced some drivers in Bethlehem to rearrange their route to work Wednesday morning.

The accident happened at 7:48 a.m. on Shimersville Road near the intersection with Applebutter Road.

Bethlehem police report the crash involved an SUV and a smaller car. The two vehicles came into conact as both  were heading north on Shimersville Road, which caused the SUV to go out of control and roll over.

The unidentified driver of the SUV was ejected. She was transported to St. Luke’s University Hospital where she is in critical condition, according to police.

The driver of the other vehicle, also unidentified. was not hurt.

The exact reason the two vehicles came into contact is still being investigated by the city's Accident Reconstruction Team.

Because of the accident and police investigation, officials closed Main Street in Freemansburg near the bridge for several hours.

Bethlehem police report the road reopened Wednesday afternoon.
