Allentown residents can exchange guns for gift cards
Allentown residents can exchange guns for gift cards in a buyback program set for this Saturday.
The city will conduct a gun buyback program as a chance for residents to get rid of unwanted firearms. Gift cards to Kmart will be exchanged for the guns.
The program will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Iglesia Christiana Emmauel Church at 113 N. Eighth Street.
It's the city's second gun buyback program in the last 10 months.
More than 100 weapons --including 70 handguns -- were turned in at the last program held in July.
“Residents can rid themselves of unwanted guns safely and properly while simultaneously receiving something useful and valuable,” said Allentown Mayor Ed Pawlowski. “I’m grateful that City Council is partnering with the administration and the police department in this effort.”
A police firearms expert will examine the weapons and police will distribute a $100 gift card for functional weapons, $15 for non-functional weapons and $10 for a BB or Airsoft gun.
Those planning to turn-in a firearm are requested to produce current photo identification or two forms of current non-photo identification.
The weapon should be brought to the location unloaded.
