ALLENTOWN, Pa. -

Students in the Allentown School District are getting the new year started with a new look.

A new rule requiring school uniforms went into effect Tuesday.

The issue of uniforms was the source of debate earlier this year.

Supporters say uniforms will create a better learning environment with fewer distractions.

Critics say the requirement will be a financial hardship for many parents in the district.

But officials say almost all of the students arrived at school Tuesday dressed in the proper uniforms.
