The City of Allentown is in a competitive mood--and if it wins, it could mean an improved Cedar Beach Park.
The city has entered a contest -- "Take It To The Park" -- sponsored by Coca-Cola, which encourages people to get active and live healthy lifestyles.
The park that receives the most votes wins a $100,000 prize--and Allentown is hoping Cedar Beach is the top vote getter.
“Cedar Beach Park is a well-known and well-loved open space, running through the central-western area of the city,” said Mayor Ed Pawlowski. “People regularly jog on its paths, swim in its pool, walk around Muhlenberg Lake, play basketball or volleyball on its courts, and attend special events there by the thousands. Additionally, thousands of people bring their young children to the Destination Playground there.”
John Mikowychok, Allentown's director of parks and recreation, says the funds would be used to improve the basketball court area.
“Depending on funds awarded, and the prizes range from $100,000 for first place to $15,000 for a ‘Wildcard’ grant, the city would use the funds to resurface the four basketball courts and adding water fountains, permanent bleachers, a Rain Garden and adult exercise equipment for parents at the playground,” Mikowychok said.
