Brian Schmidt slides loaded handgun to son, Blaine Schmidt, challenges him to 'do it,' police say
A man slid a loaded handgun across a kitchen counter to his son and told him to shoot, officials said.
Brian M. Schmidt slid the Kel-Tec P-32 semi-automatic pistol to his son, Blaine M. Schmidt, in their home at 161 Cherry Hill Rd., Bushkill Twp., Northampton Co., around 10:35 p.m. Monday during a protracted argument, officials said.
Brian Schmidt then told his son, "There. If you're gonna do it ... do it!" officials noted.
Earlier, Blaine Schmidt had left the home after an argument with his father during a family meeting that included his mother, Cindy Schmidt, officials said, adding that Blaine and Brian had called each other vulgar names.
When Blaine Schmidt returned, the argument resumed and Brian Schmidt pulled out the .32-caliber handgun and racked the slide to load one of the three bullets in it, officials said.
Cindy Schmidt turned over the handgun to police, and Brian Schmidt was found in a upstairs bedroom with an unloaded rifle, officials said.
Brian Schmidt, who turned 49 Tuesday, was charged with making terroristic threats, assault, reckless endangerment, harassment and domestic violence and committed to the Northampton County Prison on $25,000 bail, according to court documents.
A preliminary hearing is set for 9 a.m. Nov. 15.
