BETHLEHEM, Pa. -

Pennsylvania Senator Bob Casey was in Bethlehem Monday pushing for a new law to help protect senior citizens.

Casey is proposing a bill that would create a national "Silver Alert" system for senior citizens who go missing.

The system would be similar to the Amber alerts that are issued for missing children.

According to the Alzheimer's Association, six out of 10 individuals with dementia will wander.

Casey says the Silver Alert system would help federal and local emergency officials work together more efficiently to track down missing seniors.

“This is a commonsense legislation that would bring an approach that’s proven successful for missing children to missing seniors,” Casey said. “The Silver Alert system will bring federal coordination to combat a problem that is becoming more difficult as our population ages and more of our residents struggle with challenges like Alzheimer’s and dementia. Having a targeted program that is focused on seniors will better help municipalities and families during these emergencies.”
