Coca-Cola Park in Allentown ready to host Triple-A baseball championship
They'll be yelling "play ball" one more time at Coca-Cola Park in Allentown this year as the Lehigh Valley IronPigs get ready to host the Triple-A national championship game.
Team officials said the game will be a great way to showcase the park and the area to the nation.
The team said there were still some general admission tickets left for the game.
Not only will they crown a champion in the Lehigh Valley, the game will bring national exposure to the ballpark.
Workers were putting the final touches on the stands and at the front of the house Monday. Others were selling the only tickets available.
"The people that will be out here on Tuesday night are going to see a really fun event," said Jon Schaeffer, director of new media for the Lehigh Valley IronPigs.
The IronPigs announced the team would host the 2013 Triple-A national championship game last year.
"There's a lot of prestige in getting these games and a lot of it is based on how you fare over the previous few years and we've been so fortunate because the fan support has really been unrivaled across minor league baseball," added Schaeffer.
"Six-hundred-thousand fans, six years in a row," said fan, Bill Renshaw. "It's a pretty good track record."
Fans watching batting practice know how important this game is.
"It's a once every 30-year opportunity," added Renshaw.
People said they are excited to see the Durham Bulls take on the Omaha Storm Chasers.
"We'll be rooting for the Bulls here," said Renshaw. "They are from the International League. I think the place will be rowdy."
"This is a crown jewel," added Schaeffer. "This is one of minor league baseball's flagship ballparks. So to bring a national televised event here, a game that will also be on national radio, it's exciting. It's exciting for the IronPigs. It's exciting for Coca-Cola Park, and I think it's exciting for the Lehigh Valley, as well."
Team officials and fans said the only way the game would be more exciting is if the IronPigs were playing for the title.
