Company's plans spark renewed fight over farmland in Lower Nazareth
A fight over farmland has resurfaced in Northampton County.
Georgia-based IDI wants to put a large truck terminal off Newburg Road in Lower Nazareth Township.
The company wanted to put in a similar project six years ago, but it pulled out after a fight from neighbors and a decision from the state's Supreme Court.
The company is back, and the same group of citizens is hoping to repeat history.
"The surprise is it's a total disregard to our community that IDI would come back even though they were told they couldn't do it 24-7," said Ginger Buschser.
Six years ago, Buschser and her husband, Mike, were instrumental in keeping IDI from putting in three truck warehouses, with 180 loading docks, right next to their 10-acre property just off Newburg Road, on the border that separates Palmer and Lower Nazareth townships.
But the fight over farmland has resurfaced. This time, the battleground is across the street.
"They crossed Newburg Road to go to the other side," Pat Mcpherson said.
The new plan calls for an 822,000-square-foot terminal with 277 trucking bays.
For McPherson, who also spoke out six years ago, the project will have the same impact it did then.
"A 24-7 operation. What will that do to our lives?" she asked.
Buschser's biggest concern is wind. The American Cancer Society links lung cancer to exposure of diesel fuel particles.
"Outside radius is 3,000 feet. When the wind blows, it carries that far," Buchser said, while pointing to a map she made of the neighborhood.
The Buchsers said they, along with McPhereson and many others, will be in the path of those particles. Like in the past, the couple are hoping Lower Nazareth Township sides with them in the future.
"Whoever goes in to that site should be a good neighbor and consider the neighborhood as well as their own personal interests," Mike Buschser said.
Representatives from IDI did not return 69 News' phone calls. A public hearing is set for 6:30 p.m. Wednesday inside the Lower Nazareth Township building.
