EMMAUS, Pa. -

A Lehigh County man stands accused of taking money for home improvement work he never performed.

Daniel Diaz was charged last Thursday with one count each of home improvement fraud, theft by deception and receiving stolen property.

Diaz, 42, of Emmaus, accepted three checks worth a total of $6,050 from a Bethlehem homeowner as payment for renovations to a bathroom.

Diaz, police said, started the work, but never finished it. The money was instead used to pay rent to the mother of Diaz's live-in girlfriend, according to court documents. Diaz also told police he was behind in child support payments and avoided the homeowner because he knew he could not replace the money.

Diaz is due in court for a preliminary hearing on May 16.
