EASTON, Pa. -

A longtime fishing event on the Delaware River in Easton has been cancelled, due to lack of interest, organizers say.

The annual  Forks of the Delaware Shad Fishing Tournament, usually held in Easton the end of April, has been cancelled.

Organizer Pic Schoenek said last year there were only 300 registrations, down from 1,200 when the tournament began in 1983.

When Schoenek took over in 2000, she said the participants were down to around 700.

While participation was down, sponsorships were also down too, putting a severe strain on finances, Schoenek said.

She said she wasn't sure if there will ever be another event, given that the interest by those in the 16-30-year-old age group has been lacking since 2007.
