Easton has lowered the city flag in memory of a former mayor and city councilman.

Fred Ashton died Thursday in his sister's home in Seaside Heights, N.J. He was 82.

Ashton served as Easton's mayor for eight years, from 1967 to 1975. Prior to that, he served as a councilman from 1963 to 1967.

"He served our city well, always with a smile," said Mayor Sal Panto, D-Easton, in a statement Thursday afternoon. "He made a lot of improvements to our city then and some continue today."

Born in Easton, Ashton graduated from Easton High School in 1948 and from Lafayette College in 1952. He was an Eagle Scout and served in the Army during the Korean War, stationed in Germany.

Ashton worked with his wife, Shirley, at Crossroads Realty in Lavallette, N.J., before retiring. He also worked for Schuylkill Haven Casket Company.

Ashton is survived by his wife, five children, 14 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
