Homeless man sleeping at parking garage earns ticket to jail

A homeless man who had been sleeping on a parking garage bench got into more trouble when police found drugs on him, officials said.
James A. Van Gordon had a small bag of marijuana on him when he was searched after being taken into custody at the Walnut Street Parking Garage in Bethlehem around 12:15 a.m. Wednesday, officials said.
Police were called to the garage at 33 West Walnut St. when Van Gordon started giving a hard time to a Bethlehem Parking Authority employee who found him asleep on a first-floor bench and asked him to leave, officials said.
Van Gordon, 51, who was being sheltered at 44 East Market St., Bethlehem, was arraigned on charges of drug possession and public drunkenness and committed to the Northampton County Prison on $1,000, according to court documents.
A preliminary hearing is set for 9:30 a.m. Oct. 3.
