Police said felon had gun, drugs in car

EASTON, Pa. -

 A convicted felon was found with a gun and drugs when police searched his car, officials said.

James Rivers had a Hi-Point 9mm handgun with an obliterated serial number in the back seat of his Honda, which was stopped at Sitgreaves and Spring Garden streets in Easton when police approached him just before midnight Wednesday.

Police also found six packages of crack cocaine rocks, a quantity of powdered cocaine and five Percocet pills.

Rivers was arrested after police were sent to the 200 block of Spring Garden Street to investigate suspicious activity.

Rivers, 32, of 2022 Forest St., Wilson, Northampton County, was arraigned early Wednesday morning on charges of illegally possessing a firearm because of a felony conviction, altering or obliterating identification marks and carrying a firearm without a license and drug possession. He was committed to the Northampton County Prison on $35,000 bail, according to court documents.

A preliminary hearing is set for 9 a.m. Aug. 28.
