UPPER MOUNT BETHEL TWP., Pa. -

A man assaulted his wife and destroyed her cell phone after tracking her down using her car, officials said.

John C. Labar hit his wife in the face with a fist after pushing her to the ground while trying to take away her cell phone on Boulder Drive, about a quarter-mile north of Audubon Drive, in Upper Mount Bethel Township, Northampton Co., at about 7:50 p.m. Thursday, officials said.

Labar destroyed the cell phone so his wife could not call police, officials said, adding that Labar followed his wife in their car for about a mile after she left on foot from their home in the 300 block of Delaware Avenue in Portland, Northampton Co., officials said.

Labar's wife, who was found with a swollen right eye, told police she left home after Labar accused her of cheating on him, officials said.

Labar, 25, was arraigned on charges of assault and harassment and committed to the Northampton County Prison on $5,000 bail, according to court documents.

A preliminary hearing is set for 9:30 a.m. July 1.
